Vertical crankshaft engines can’t replace horizontal crankshaft engines most of the time. A vertical crankshaft engine may look similar to a horizontal crankshaft engine (vice versa), but because the ways of the two engines’ set up, one can’t replace another. What is a HORIZONTAL crankshaft engine? A Horizontal (side) crankshaft engine has a crankshaft on its side and when mounted on an application, the crankshaft must point side way. A Horizontal crankshaft engine can’t replace a vertical crankshaft engine most of the time. Measure the Diameter of a crankshaft. Diameter is the distance of the center of a circle (see picture). It is very important that your new engine crankshaft’s diameter must be the same as your old engine’s in order to reuse all the pulleys and electric clutches.
